Breakout Country Artist SHAYLEN Releases New Heartfelt Single "Roots"
SHAYLEN
— BREAKOUT NASHVILLE COUNTRY ARTIST —
RELEASES SOULFUL NEW SINGLE RETURNING TO HER
“ROOTS”
WITH NOSTALGIC MUSIC VIDEO
NASHVILLE, TN (October 14, 2022) — Breakout country artist Shaylen gives us another look into her new musical era with “Roots,” her most personally fulfilling track. The soulful ballad, out today, written alongside Jess Cayne and Eric Arjes on a whim, came together just as naturally as her fall back into country music. The single arrives accompanied by a nostalgic music video that paints the full picture, driving home Shaylen’s story of leaving Los Angeles as a pop artist and getting back to her Tennessee roots and first love: country music.
With a sweet melody and emotional build-up, Shaylen showcases her powerhouse vocals in this impassioned song. By the end, the track crescendos into the final chorus in what feels like a weight being lifted off your chest.

“This song has an extra special place in my heart,” shares Shaylen. “I was in the middle of leaving my life behind in L.A. after 10 years. Last summer I had my very first write in Nashville and it all clicked immediately…I was supposed to be here. I’m from Chattanooga originally so it would seem obvious but sometimes you just have to take the long way around in life, I guess. I’ll remember the day we wrote it ‘till I’m 90; We were all crying by the end of it.”
Her inaugural country single, “What If I Don’t,” marked the first release of this new musical exploration. Gaining immediate attention in the country music scene, the single reached over 2.2 million streams across both Apple Music and Spotify. Co-written by Shaylen, Seth Ennis, Phil Barton and Lindsay Rimes, and produced by Ilya Toshinskiy (Jimmie Allen, Riley Green) and Lindsay Rimes (Thomas Rhett, LoCash), “What If I Don’t” laid the groundwork for what’s to come. The song was added to multiple playlists upon its release (July 22) including Whiskey Riff’s “New Music Friday” playlist, Spotify’s “New Music Friday Country” playlist and Apple’s “New In Country” playlist.
Born in Chattanooga, TN and raised in Dallas, the now Nashville-based country singer/songwriter, Shaylen is no stranger to the world of country music. Growing up with the voices of icons from Elvis to Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Nelson to Janis Joplin floating through her home, Shaylen has been influenced by all genres of music from the very beginning. Her roots in the south are where her country and gospel influences came from and are the core of who she is as an artist. These influences shine through in her first country single, “What If I Don’t” (released July 22), the foundational release of this new, authentic chapter of Shaylen’s career.
A powerhouse vocalist at a young age, Shaylen has always had music in her soul. She had her introduction to performing at the ripe age of seven, singing a solo of “Bringing in the Sheaves” at her church. “I just remember it was the first time in my early years where anything and everything made sense in those three minutes of being on stage, and the closest I’ve ever felt to God,” Shaylen shares, “And I just knew in that exact moment this is what I’m gonna do and no one is gonna stop me. And every time I’m on stage it’s the exact same feeling. I don’t think I will ever get tired of it.”
After spending 10 years in Los Angeles, CA as a thriving pop artist with Republic Records, Shaylen found it was her time to come home. Garnering a strong fanbase and tens-of millions of streams from the slew of EPs and singles she released during her time there, Shaylen felt it was time to make the return back to her roots. “I really am thankful for my time in LA because it taught me so many different writing techniques I’ve learned over the years that I’m able to apply in my country music,” admits Shaylen. “I think being able to be submerged in the different cultures of music has been extremely helpful in how I write and sing all together. It’s actually crazy ‘cause switching to country [music] is the first time where I’ve truly felt like my most authentic true self. In fact, it feels far more clear than pop ever did.”
Although she’s made the jump from pop music to country, Shaylen has always used her music as an avenue for working through emotions and experiences in life, while staying true to herself. This upcoming body of work will take listeners on an emotional rollercoaster. “By the end of every song I hope listeners can resonate and apply their own stories to the songs and know that they can get through anything,” says Shaylen. As she settles into her new life in Nashville, Shaylen continues to tap into what feels right as her most genuine artistic self.
