"It's times like these when the temperatures freeze, I sit alone just looking at the world through a storm window"

- John Prine, from “Storm Windows”

NASHVILLE, TN (FEBRUARY 16, 2024) — Today, New York-based duo The Storm Windows Rob and Don Mathews – announce the release of their new acoustic EP, Blue Town, due for release on Friday, April 12. Reflecting their recent live performances, the two decided to take an acoustic-based approach to the new project. “We think of it as full-on Americana as you can get,” Rob says. “With six new original compositions: an outlaw song, a song of nostalgia, one of lost-love, a folk-hero tribute, another reflecting on life and a bonus 50s-style rocker, all in that order.”

With two full-length albums — debut self-titled album (February 2022) and Second Album (March 2023) —now under their belts, the brothers now gear up for their first release of 2024. The first look into the project is the title track due for release on March 1. “Blue Town” is a track that The Storm Windows recorded live in Burlington, Vermont. When asked what the song is about they answer, “We’re happy to take the question, but there’s no one answer. It’s about almost remembering the past - it’s about love and loss and gain - it’s about the end of summer.” Combining themes about the different parts of life, this quintessential Americana track perfectly showcases what’s to come from the EP.

Following close behind, the second single from the EP, “I Find Trouble (Trouble Finds Me)” is due out on March 29. “We write a lot of ‘road’ songs,” Rob begins, “But this one is different. We think the title speaks for itself. Sometimes we’re running to something. Sometimes we’re running from something. Sometimes both.” The pair never shies away from addressing the tougher topics in life, including what could go wrong and the times when you may be at your lowest.

Coming off the release of the Second Album, Blue Town gives a fresh breath into what we know as The Storm Windows without straying too far from their roots. “The record Second Album had an overarching theme of hope,” note Rob and Don. “We didn’t set out to make a statement, or concept album, but it partly came out that way. No one wants ‘hit-me-over-the-head’ protest songs anymore, so we’ve focused on universal themes – like just trying to be better.”

Contrary to their works in the past, Blue Town is composed of sixoriginal songs, though The Storm Windows are proficient in performing both as an original band and cover band. Following the method of their first album, they continued to choose songs from both categories on this record to showcase their strengths. Blending the established sounds of Americana with a pinch of classic rock, the duo uses their unique formula to give modish life to some traditional sounds. “Our songs take stock of the current American landscape. Rob resides in London part of the year, where he can view the American experience — for better or for worse — through an objective lens,” Don shares about their writing process. “We said our first album focused on the opportunity of the ongoing experiment, rather than its challenges, which we were saving for the second album. Well… here it is.”

The Mathews brothers conclude “when we record our originals, we debate over a classic versus contemporary sound. Where we land is we want something that twenty years from now, or even twenty years ago, still sounds timely.”
