NASHVILLE, TN (February 13, 2025) — Today, indie-pop artist Blue Monkey is continuing the pursuit to redefine freedom with a sentimental music video for their latest single “Golden Rule” (released January 31). A poetic meditation on independence, the track is inspired by the golden rule of William Morris: “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Although the video was unplanned, Blue Monkey stumbled upon the Skyline Lanes bowling alley in Clarksville, TN, and found a story worth telling. The documentary style video follows Blue Monkey exploring the well-loved rooms, finding the beauty in the historical building through the people — like the owner, Becky, who saved the company from closure, or José, who is one of the only remaining vintage Brunswick mechanics in the country. It’s a video rich in charm and intention, where people found their place and their purpose within a seemingly simple bowling alley.

The song explores Morris’ ethos as a lens for life and love, where everything — and everyone — is chosen not out of need, but out of beauty and purpose. It’s a liberating perspective, one that challenges the weight of attachment and celebrates the elegance of intentionality.

Under the Radar exclusively revealed the track, praising: “‘Golden Rule’ sees Blue Monkey leaning into gentle, soft-focus folk pop, accompanying her lilting vocals with plaintive acoustic tones and feather-light harmonies.”

Whether it’s a lover or a string of glowing promenade lights, “Golden Rule” asks why we shouldn’t approach our lives with the same thoughtful care as we curate the spaces around us. It’s a lesson in finding freedom through simplicity, where the unnecessary becomes the profoundly beautiful. Blue Monkey’s vision lives in the in-betweens, choosing beauty over labels and boxes: it’s indie that doesn’t stick to the script, ambient pop that refuses the gloss, along with a lyrical story that dives for the heart.

The lyric video takes the premise of the track and creates a beautiful visual for the words, displaying images from the past that encapsulate Blue Monkey’s vision. It’s a collage of the simplistic beauty that can be found in the mundane, and the importance of intentionally cherry-picking aspects of our lives to create something worth experiencing.

Blue Monkey, the sonic alter ego of Charlee Remitz — who was praised by LA Weekly, American Songwriter, and Alternative Press — has been crafting songs that blur the lines between societal fences. In Blue Monkey’s universe, the boundaries between creator and creation dissolve, enabling art to flourish in its most genuine and primal form. Blue Monkey shares, “The moniker, in a way, removes the presence of impact, returning the art to its most primitive stages — creation, or else.” This signifies a break from rigid identities, inviting listeners to step beyond the limits of the self and delve into the essence of retaining childlike imagination, encouraging us to fully embrace our potential without the constraints imposed by society.

Blue Monkey introduced this new persona with the release of “Pylons” on August 16 and “Pretty Things” on September 13. “Pylons,” with its fitting 11:11 runtime — a nod to its Mayan influence — paints a picture of life in Nebraska, where simplicity thrives and stars illuminate the sky. Meanwhile, “Pretty Things” celebrates the transformative power of aesthetics, exploring how the way we adorn our surroundings can profoundly impact our lives, striving to bring that truth into focus. The unvarnished “Common Enemies” was released on November 22, and it exposes the tenderness, the betrayal, and the competition hiding just beneath the surface of most friendships. The track doesn’t ask permission to go dark; it leans into the real places, the spaces where friendship gets tangled with resentment and personal agendas, where human connection’s rough edges are exposed.

Blue Monkey (Chuen), the 11th sign of the Mayan Zodiac, symbolizes the birth of creativity for humanity, uniting the past, present, and future. For Charlee Remitz, it transcends the idea of an alter ego, becoming a gateway to freedom — where the weight of an inherited name can be cast aside, and fresh seeds of creativity can bloom in an expansive garden. This whimsical perspective on life has ignited more than just a revival of artistry; it has initiated a homecoming, encouraging a return to patience and advocating for a journey through life filled with joy rather than obligation.

Blue Monkey is about refusing categorization, working in an indie-pop hybrid that feels limitless — a place where banjo riffs meet airy synths, and the result feels like it was always meant to be. The music becomes a release — a way for the artist to strip down identity, reinvent, and give listeners a way into that freedom, too. With vivid lyrics that invite listeners to question, reflect, and reclaim, Blue Monkey is carving out a space that’s wholly their own. Their work is a call to all who want to transcend boundaries — of genre, of self — to explore, play, and live without labels. As Blue Monkey continues to transform, they aspire for their music to serve as a permission slip for others to redefine their identities without boundaries.
